TEN CRITICAL QUESTIONS ON CURRENT GEOPLOITICAL AND NATIONAL ISSUES – 215
Q1. The proposed Siang Hydropower Project in Arunachal Pradesh has faced local opposition. Should India prioritise national security and energy generation over the concerns of indigenous communities?
Answer: Sir/Ma'am, national security and the rights of indigenous communities should not be treated as opposing interests. The Siang project may improve electricity generation, water management and strategic preparedness near the China border. However, local communities have genuine concerns about displacement, livelihoods and environmental damage. The government should conduct credible environmental assessments, consult affected communities and provide transparent information. Rehabilitation and protection of local culture must receive serious attention. A project should proceed only after applicable legal and environmental requirements are satisfied. My view is that national security becomes stronger when development enjoys public trust. Strategic infrastructure should be scientifically sound, socially acceptable and environmentally sustainable.
Q2. Drug trafficking from Myanmar has emerged as a serious challenge for Northeast India. Can stronger border security alone solve this problem?
