TEN CRITICAL QUESTIONS ON CURRENT GEOPLOITICAL AND NATIONAL ISSUES – 165
1. Should India be seriously concerned about China's mega-dam on the Yarlung Zangbo even though China says downstream interests will not be harmed?
Answer: Yes, India has legitimate concerns because it is a lower-riparian country. China's proposed project on the Yarlung Zangbo, which becomes the Brahmaputra in India, is planned at about 60 GW. India's concerns include downstream flows, ecological impact, sediment movement and risks from sudden water releases or infrastructure failure. However, India should avoid treating every Chinese hydropower project purely as a security threat. The better approach is institutional cooperation: real-time hydrological data, advance warning, transparent project information and disaster-management mechanisms involving China, India and Bangladesh. Transboundary rivers ultimately require cooperation alongside strategic preparedness.
