TEN CRITICAL QUESTIONS ON CURRENT GEOPLOITICAL AND NATIONAL ISSUES – 156
1. What does the Nepal flood disaster teach India about managing Himalayan climate risks?
Answer: The Nepal disaster shows that Himalayan risks are increasingly compound and transboundary. Floods can result from extreme rainfall, landslides, glacier instability, temporary river blockages and sudden release of stored water. Nepal has reported hundreds of deaths and missing persons, while infrastructure and communication networks have been badly damaged. India, Nepal, Bhutan and China need real-time hydrological data-sharing, satellite monitoring and common early-warning protocols. Roads, bridges and hydropower projects must also be designed for future climate conditions rather than historical averages.
2. Should India and China clarify the Line of Actual Control even before reaching a final boundary settlement?
