Context
The Government of India recently launched the SUMAN Roadmap 2030 during the 16th Conference of the Central Council of Health and Family Welfare (CCHFW). The roadmap aims to accelerate improvements in maternal and newborn health and aligns India's health strategy with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
History of the Issue
India has made significant progress in reducing maternal and infant mortality over the past two decades through initiatives such as the National Health Mission (NHM), Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY), Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan (PMSMA), and the Surakshit Matritva Aashwasan (SUMAN) programme launched in 2019. Despite these gains, regional disparities, high-risk pregnancies, inadequate emergency obstetric care, and unequal healthcare access continue to pose challenges.
