Context: The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has recently launched the Samriddhi Kendra initiative under the BharatNet project to accelerate digital transformation in rural India. The initiative aims to convert connectivity into tangible socio-economic outcomes at the grassroots level.
Introduction and Salient Features: Samriddhi Kendras are designed as one-stop digital service hubs at the Gram Panchayat level. Implemented by DoT in collaboration with the Digital Empowerment Foundation (DEF) under the Telecom Technology Development Fund (TTDF), these centres aim to operationalise the vision of “Samriddh Gram.” Pilot projects have been launched in select villages across Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Andhra Pradesh. The centres provide integrated services including e-health (health ATMs, telemedicine), e-education (digital literacy, online learning), e-governance (access to government schemes, DBT), and support for agriculture and rural livelihoods.
