Rakthamichthys anchi: New Subterranean Swamp Eel from Assam
Context: Scientists have described a new species of blind, groundwater-dwelling swamp eel, Rakthamichthys anchi, from wells in Goalpara district, Assam. The species was formally described in the journal Zootaxa in 2026.
Background: India is increasingly recognised for its unusual subterranean fish diversity. The genus Rakthamichthys includes highly specialised, aquifer-dwelling swamp eels, several of which were earlier known mainly from the Western Ghats. Recent studies have shown substantial hidden genetic diversity among these groundwater fishes, while also warning that their habitats are poorly studied and vulnerable to human disturbance.
Salient Features: R. anchi is a phreatobitic species, meaning that it is specially adapted to life in underground aquifers. It is elongated and worm-like, lacks external eyes, and has translucent skin. Its striking red appearance comes from visible blood vessels rather than red body pigment. It differs from related species by features such as the absence of certain lateral-line canal pores and a higher number of preanal vertebrae.
Significance for India: The discovery highlights the largely unexplored biodiversity of Northeast India's groundwater systems. Such aquifers should be viewed not merely as water sources but also as unique ecological habitats. The finding strengthens the case for groundwater-sensitive biodiversity surveys, pollution control and habitat protection.
Current Status: The species is newly described and remains poorly known. Only a very small number of specimens have been documented, and its population size, distribution and conservation requirements require further scientific study.
