Background
The term Toshakhana literally means "treasure house." The concept dates back to the Mughal period, when valuable gifts received from foreign rulers were stored in the royal treasury. In independent India, formal rules governing Toshakhana were first notified in 1978 and are presently regulated under the Toshakhana Rules, 2024, administered by the Ministry of External Affairs.
