PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana — Rooftop Solar Revolution
Context: The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana has crossed 50.06 lakh beneficiary households, with 14.8 GW of rooftop solar capacity commissioned. Nearly 19 lakh households are now reporting zero electricity bills.
Background: Announced in February 2024, PM Surya Ghar is a Central Sector Scheme implemented by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. It aims to install rooftop solar systems in one crore households with an overall outlay of ₹75,021 crore. The scheme builds upon India’s earlier grid-connected rooftop solar programme but seeks much faster household-level adoption.
