PATRIOT INTERCEPTOR MISSILE
Background
The Patriot Interceptor Missile System has recently gained renewed global attention after the United States awarded a record defence contract worth US$58.6 billion to Lockheed Martin to significantly expand Patriot interceptor production. The decision comes in response to shrinking US missile inventories caused by sustained support for Ukraine and heightened military operations in the Middle East. The Patriot system remains one of the world's most widely deployed and battle-tested air and missile defence systems.
History of the System
Developed in the United States, the Patriot (Phased Array Tracking Radar for Intercept on Target) was originally designed by Raytheon Technologies, while the advanced PAC-3 MSE interceptor is manufactured by Lockheed Martin. The system entered service in the early 1980s and gained international recognition during the 1991 Gulf War, where it was used to intercept Iraqi Scud missiles. Since then, it has been continuously upgraded to counter evolving threats such as ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, aircraft, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

The Patriot system combines a powerful AN/MPQ-53 phased-array radar, command-and-control stations, and interceptor missiles into an integrated air defence network. Depending on the variant, it can engage targets at ranges of 20–150 km and altitudes of about 20 km or more. The latest PAC-3 MSE employs Hit-to-Kill technology, destroying incoming missiles through direct kinetic impact rather than explosive fragmentation. The new US contract aims to increase annual PAC-3 MSE production from 600 to about 2,000 interceptors by 2032 while also developing the lower-cost PAC-3 ACE for counter-drone missions.
India's Stand
India is pursuing a multi-layered indigenous air and missile defence architecture through systems such as Akash, Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD), S-400 Triumf, and the Project Kusha programme. India supports strengthening national air defence capabilities while promoting strategic stability and responsible defence preparedness.
Current Status
The Patriot system continues to play a critical role in modern conflicts, particularly in Ukraine, where it has been used against advanced ballistic and cruise missiles. Rising missile and drone threats worldwide have increased global demand for sophisticated air defence systems, making Patriot a key component of contemporary missile defence and a benchmark for future air defence technologies.

Answer: Advanced air defence systems improve protection against missile and drone attacks. They strengthen deterrence and reduce vulnerability. Answer: National security is essential, but resources are limited. Defence spending should be based on realistic threat assessments and balanced with investments in education, healthcare and infrastructure. Strong economic growth supports strong defence. A balanced budget improves both national security and long-term national development.
