Why in News?
India has significantly expanded its global engagement under the National Critical Minerals Mission (NCMM) by building a strategic network with 35 countries, including 24 bilateral agreements and ongoing negotiations with 11 others. The initiative aims to secure reliable supplies of critical minerals and reduce dependence on concentrated global supply chains.
Background
Critical minerals such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, graphite, gallium, germanium, and rare earth elements are essential for electric vehicles, renewable energy, semiconductors, defence systems, electronics, and advanced manufacturing. Recognising their strategic importance, the Government announced the National Critical Minerals Mission in the Union Budget 2024–25, and the Union Cabinet approved it on 29 January 2025. The mission will be implemented from 2024–25 to 2030–31 with a total outlay of ₹34,300 crore.
