The Mekedatu Dam Project is a proposed multi-purpose balancing reservoir on the Cauvery River at Mekedatu in Ramanagara district, Karnataka, near the confluence of the Cauvery and Arkavathi rivers. The project has recently gained attention after the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly unanimously passed a resolution urging the Union Government not to grant technical or environmental clearance to the project.
The proposed reservoir will have a storage capacity of 66 TMC (thousand million cubic feet). Karnataka states that the project aims to provide 4 TMC of drinking water annually to Bengaluru and nearby areas and generate 400 MW of hydroelectric power. It maintains that the reservoir will store only surplus monsoon water and will not reduce Tamil Nadu's allocated share under the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal (CWDT) award.
