Context: The Matua community has recently been in focus as national leaders extended greetings on the occasion of the Matua Dharma Mela, commemorating the 215th birth anniversary of Harichand Thakur. The event highlights the socio-political importance of this community, especially in West Bengal.

Introduction and Historical Background: The Matua community is a socio-religious group primarily found in West Bengal and Bangladesh. It originated in the mid-19th century under the leadership of Harichand Thakur in Orakandi (now in Bangladesh). The movement emerged as a reformist branch of Vaishnavism aimed at uplifting the marginalized “Namashudra” (Dalit) community by rejecting caste discrimination and ritualism. His son, Guru Chand Thakur, further institutionalized the movement by emphasizing education and social reform.
