The Lion Species Spotlight Program was recently inaugurated at Sasan Gir by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change as part of the pre-summit activities of the International Big Cat Alliance Summit 2026. The programme is a species-focused global platform dedicated to conservation of major big cats, especially the Asiatic lion.
The initiative aims to highlight the declining global status of lions, whose worldwide population has declined significantly because of habitat loss, poaching, climate stress and human-wildlife conflict. It also seeks to showcase India’s successful “Gir conservation model” and the achievements of Project Lion. Experts, policymakers, scientists and representatives from lion-range countries participated to discuss conservation strategies, research collaboration and technological innovations.
