Leopardus tilcayo: New Wild Cat Species Identified in Bolivia
Current Affairs Note
Scientists have formally identified a new wild cat species, Leopardus tilcayo, from Bolivia’s Yungas cloud forests, where the Andes meet the Amazon basin. The study was published in Current Biology on 17 September 2026. It is described as the first living cat species formally named and described in more than a century.
Salient Points
Leopardus tilcayo belongs to the South American tiger cat group of the genus Leopardus. It is a very small feline, measuring about 46 cm in body length and weighing around 1.4 kg, with light-brown fur and dark irregular rosettes. Preliminary evidence suggests that it is largely nocturnal and feeds on small rodents.
