The project is expected to strengthen India's renewable energy capacity while improving the utilization of waters from the western rivers under the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT).
Background
The project was first conceived in 1984 but witnessed prolonged delays due to technical, environmental, and treaty-related considerations, including objections raised by Pakistan under the Indus Waters Treaty framework. It is being implemented by Chenab Valley Power Projects Limited (CVPPPL), a joint venture of NHPC (51%) and Jammu & Kashmir State Power Development Corporation (JKSPDC) (49%).
