Kimi K3: World's Largest Open-Weight AI Model Launched by Moonshot AI
Chinese AI startup Moonshot AI has launched Kimi K3, currently one of the world's largest open-weight Large Language Models (LLMs). Announced in July 2026, the model represents a significant milestone in the global AI race by making its trained model weights publicly available for research and customization, although its training data and source code remain proprietary. This distinguishes it from fully open-source AI models.
Kimi K3 is built on an advanced Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) architecture with approximately 2.8 trillion parameters and 896 expert networks, while activating only a small number of experts for each query to improve computational efficiency. It supports a 1 million-token context window, enabling it to process lengthy documents, books, and large software repositories. The model has demonstrated strong reasoning, coding, and agentic capabilities, reportedly performing competitively with leading proprietary AI systems in several independent benchmarks.
