The famous Khorasani Tamarind of Mandu in Dhar district, Madhya Pradesh, has recently been granted the Geographical Indication (GI) Tag, recognising its unique geographical origin, historical significance, and distinctive qualities. The recognition is expected to strengthen the livelihoods of local tribal communities and promote the product in domestic and international markets.
Despite its name, Khorasani Tamarind is not true tamarind. It is the fruit of the Baobab tree (Adansonia digitata), a species native to Africa. Historical records suggest that Arab and Afghan traders introduced the tree to Mandu during the 14th century, particularly under the rule of Mahmud Khilji. Over centuries, the tree has become an integral part of Mandu’s ecological and cultural landscape.
