Jharkhand's renowned silk products, Bhagaiya Silk and Kuchai Silk, have recently been granted the Geographical Indication (GI) Tag, providing legal recognition and protection to these traditional textile products. The recognition is a significant milestone for the state's silk industry, tribal artisans, and rural economy.
Bhagaiya Silk is a premium variety of Tussar silk produced in the Bhagaiya region of Godda district. It is known for its natural golden sheen, fine texture, durability, and traditional hand-reeling techniques. Kuchai Silk, produced mainly in the Kuchai region of Saraikela-Kharsawan district, is a distinctive wild Tussar silk. The silkworms are reared naturally on Arjun and Asan trees, making the product eco-friendly, organic, and closely linked to the region's forest-based livelihood system.
