The recent launch of the indigenously developed Td (Tetanus and Adult Diphtheria) vaccine by the Central Research Institute marks a major milestone in India’s public health and vaccine self-reliance. Developed under Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standards, CRI, Kasauli has become the first government institute in India to produce vaccines at this level, reinforcing domestic manufacturing capabilities.
Historically, India has relied on vaccines like Tetanus Toxoid (TT) under the Universal Immunization Programme. However, recognising the continued burden of diphtheria and the need for broader protection, the government replaced TT with Td in its immunisation schedule. India had already achieved Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus Elimination (MNTE) status in 2015, but sporadic cases of diphtheria highlighted the need for combined immunisation.
