The recent five-year agreement between the Food Corporation of India (FCI) and the World Food Programme (WFP) marks a significant step in India’s transition from a food-deficit nation to a global food security partner. Under this agreement, India will supply 200,000 metric tonnes of rice to support WFP’s humanitarian operations worldwide.
Historically, India itself relied on food aid during the 1960s, particularly under PL-480 imports. However, the Green Revolution transformed India into a food-surplus country. Today, India is the world’s largest rice producer and exporter, contributing around 28% of global production and over 40% of international rice trade. This transformation has enabled India to play a proactive role in global food security initiatives.
