India has officially withdrawn its bid to host the 2028 UN climate summit (COP33), a decision communicated to the Asia-Pacific group in April 2026. The summit is part of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) process, where annual Conferences of Parties (COP) review progress on global climate commitments.
A key factor behind India’s decision is the timing of COP33, which coincides with the second Global Stocktake (GST) under the Paris Agreement. Hosting such a summit would have placed India under significant international pressure to commit to more stringent climate targets, including accelerated fossil fuel phase-down. Additionally, concerns have been raised regarding developed countries’ failure to fulfill climate finance and technology transfer commitments, undermining trust in the COP process.
Domestic considerations also played a role. With general elections due in 2029 and other large-scale events planned, logistical and administrative constraints influenced the decision.
