Context

History of the Issue
The e200X–PT01 is an Electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing (eVTOL) aircraft capable of taking off and landing vertically like a helicopter while cruising horizontally like an airplane. The ePlane Company was founded in 2019 by Prof. Satya Chakravarthy at IIT Madras and has designed, engineered and assembled the aircraft entirely in India. The aircraft follows a lift-plus-cruise configuration with six vertical lift rotors and four forward propellers, avoiding the complexity of tilt-rotor systems. It is a three-seater (one pilot and two passengers), carries a 200 kg payload, has a range of 110 km on a single charge and a maximum cruise speed of 160 km/h. Advanced features include Distributed Electric Propulsion (DEP) for enhanced safety and the NVIDIA IGX Thor computing platform for real-time sensor fusion and 360-degree situational awareness.
India's Stand
India views electric air mobility as a strategic opportunity under the Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives. The government supports innovation in clean mobility, indigenous aerospace manufacturing and emerging aviation technologies. The ePlane Company has become the first private Indian company to receive Design Organisation Approval (DOA) from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) for electric aircraft development.
Current Status
The e200X–PT01 is currently undergoing ground testing at the company's Chennai facility. Uncrewed certified test flights are planned for mid-2027, with commercial operations targeted for 2028, subject to regulatory approvals.
