India recently achieved a major milestone in judicial reform when the Chief Justice of India, Justice Surya Kant, declared Sikkim as the country’s first completely paperless judiciary during the National Conference on Technology and Judicial Education held in Gangtok. A paperless judiciary refers to a system where all judicial functions — from filing of cases to delivery of judgments — are conducted digitally without physical paperwork. It includes e-filing, digital records, electronic case tracking, online notices and virtual hearings. The system has been implemented from the High Court level to district courts in Sikkim.
