Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO)’s Chandrayaan-3 mission has recently received the prestigious American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Goddard Astronautics Award 2026 for its historic achievement of successfully landing near the Moon’s south polar region. The mission marked a major milestone in India’s space programme and enhanced India’s position in global space exploration.
Chandrayaan-3 was launched on 14 July 2023 from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre using the LVM3-M4 launch vehicle. On 23 August 2023, India became the first country to achieve a soft landing near the lunar south pole and the fourth country overall to successfully land on the Moon. The mission was designed as a follow-up to Chandrayaan-2 after the earlier lander crash in 2019.
