Context
During the historic State Visit of President Droupadi Murmu to North Macedonia on 21–22 July 2026, India and North Macedonia agreed to deepen cooperation in trade, technology, tourism, talent development, healthcare and digital public infrastructure. The visit marked a new phase in bilateral relations by adopting an ambitious economic partnership framework aimed at expanding commercial and strategic engagement.
History of the Issue
India formally established diplomatic relations with North Macedonia in 1995, while it had supported the country's admission to the United Nations after its peaceful independence from Yugoslavia in 1991. In 2019, following the Prespa Agreement with Greece, the country officially adopted the name Republic of North Macedonia, resolving a long-standing naming dispute. Despite cordial political relations, bilateral trade remained modest at around US$133 million in 2025, far below the potential of the two economies.
Salient Points
The two countries agreed to double bilateral trade by the end of this decade. Economic cooperation will be guided by the "Four Ts" model—Trade, Technology, Tourism and Talent. Priority sectors include IT, Artificial Intelligence, cybersecurity, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, food processing, textiles and healthcare. India invited North Macedonia to collaborate on its Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI), including the UPI ecosystem. India also doubled ITEC training slots, introducing advanced AI courses, and renewed the Health Cooperation MoU for another five years with emphasis on traditional systems of medicine. North Macedonia also expressed interest in joining India's global initiatives such as the International Solar Alliance (ISA), Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI) and the Global Biofuels Alliance (GBA).
India's Stand
India views North Macedonia as a reliable partner in the Balkans and supports stronger economic, technological and people-to-people ties. It welcomes greater cooperation through digital innovation, capacity building and sustainable development while appreciating North Macedonia's consistent support for India's permanent membership in the UN Security Council.
Current Status
The agreement has established a roadmap for expanding bilateral economic cooperation through trade, investment, joint ventures, technology transfer and institutional partnerships. Implementation is expected through business forums, sector-specific collaborations and enhanced governmental engagement, making the partnership an important component of India's growing outreach to Europe under its broader economic diplomacy strategy.
Analytical Questions
1. Question: Why is India's growing engagement with North Macedonia important despite the relatively small volume of bilateral trade?
Answer: Trade figures alone do not show the full importance of a partnership. North Macedonia gives India access to the Balkan region and supports India's position in multilateral forums like the UN. Stronger ties can create new markets, diversify India's economic partnerships, and increase India's strategic presence in Europe over the long term.
2. Question: How can the "Four Ts" model strengthen India–North Macedonia relations beyond trade?
Answer: The Four Ts create cooperation in many areas together. Technology supports innovation, tourism builds cultural understanding, and talent exchange develops skilled people. These links create trust and long-term partnerships. They also encourage investment, research, education, and business cooperation instead of limiting relations to buying and selling goods.
3. Question: Why is India's offer to share Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) significant in foreign policy?
Answer: India is using successful digital platforms like UPI as a tool of international cooperation. Sharing DPI improves financial inclusion and digital governance in partner countries. It also enhances India's reputation as a provider of affordable technology and strengthens economic ties without creating heavy financial dependence.
4. Question: How can this agreement contribute to India's economic diplomacy in Europe?
Answer: The agreement helps India build stronger links with smaller European economies alongside major powers. It creates opportunities for Indian businesses, promotes investment, and expands technology cooperation. Such partnerships reduce dependence on a few markets and improve India's economic influence across different regions of Europe.
5. Question: If you were advising the Government of India, what should be the next step after signing this agreement?
Answer: India should focus on implementation rather than announcements. It should encourage business delegations, support joint ventures, promote digital cooperation, increase student and professional exchanges, and regularly review progress. Measurable outcomes in trade, investment, technology, and skills will determine the agreement's long-term success.
