Context
During the historic State Visit of President Droupadi Murmu to North Macedonia on 21–22 July 2026, India and North Macedonia agreed to deepen cooperation in trade, technology, tourism, talent development, healthcare and digital public infrastructure. The visit marked a new phase in bilateral relations by adopting an ambitious economic partnership framework aimed at expanding commercial and strategic engagement.
History of the Issue
India formally established diplomatic relations with North Macedonia in 1995, while it had supported the country's admission to the United Nations after its peaceful independence from Yugoslavia in 1991. In 2019, following the Prespa Agreement with Greece, the country officially adopted the name Republic of North Macedonia, resolving a long-standing naming dispute. Despite cordial political relations, bilateral trade remained modest at around US$133 million in 2025, far below the potential of the two economies.
