Why in News?
During Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Jakarta, India and Indonesia signed around 20 major agreements covering defence, maritime security, trade, digital connectivity, critical minerals, education, healthcare, and cultural cooperation. Both countries reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and promoting a free, open, inclusive, and rules-based Indo-Pacific.
Background
India and Indonesia share centuries-old civilisational ties rooted in trade, culture, and Hindu-Buddhist heritage. Diplomatic relations were established in 1950, and the partnership was elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2018. As maritime neighbours located at the two ends of the Strait of Malacca, both countries have a shared interest in ensuring maritime security, freedom of navigation, and regional stability in the Indo-Pacific.
