Current Context
On 9 July 2026, during the Third India–Australia Annual Summit in Melbourne, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese signed a new Joint Declaration on Defence and Security Cooperation, replacing the 2009 framework. The two countries also finalised administrative arrangements for the long-term supply of Australian uranium to India under their Civil Nuclear Cooperation Agreement.
Background
India and Australia elevated their ties from the 2009 Joint Declaration on Security Cooperation to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP) in 2020. The Mutual Logistics Support Arrangement (MLSA) signed in 2020 allows reciprocal access to military bases, refuelling, and maintenance facilities. Both countries also maintain a 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue, annual leaders' summits, and regular military staff talks to strengthen strategic coordination.
