ICC WOMEN’S WORLD CUP 2025: INDIA’S HISTORIC TRIUMPH

6 March 2026

1.      Introduction: India’s victory in the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 marks a defining moment in India’s sporting, cultural, and gender-equality journey. For the first time since the tournament’s inception in 1973, India’s women lifted the world title—an achievement with emotional significance comparable to the men’s 1983 and 2011 victories. The win symbolises the maturing of women’s cricket, long-term institutional reforms, and deeper societal acceptance of women athletes.

Hosted jointly by India and Sri Lanka (Sept–Nov 2025), the event featured eight teams. India dominated the league stage and registered a landmark semifinal victory over Australia, historically the strongest women’s cricket nation. In the final, India defeated South Africa by 52 runs at DY Patil Stadium. Record crowds and global viewership reflected a cultural shift in spectatorship for women’s sport.
