Hippocampus Amandavincente: New Seahorse Species Discovered in India
Context
Indian researchers have reported a new seahorse species, Hippocampus amandavincente, from the coastal waters of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Initial specimens were obtained as bycatch from the Tuticorin Fisheries Harbour, while live individuals were later documented near Anchuthengu in Kerala at around 15 metres depth.
Salient Features
The species belongs to the family Syngnathidae and genus Hippocampus. It has a comparatively short and deep snout, five prominent coronet spines, bony body rings and strong camouflage ability. Like other seahorses, it is carnivorous and feeds mainly on small crustaceans and microscopic invertebrates. Its prehensile tail helps it remain attached to rocks, corals or marine vegetation while waiting for prey.
Historical and Scientific Significance
The discovery helps resolve a long-standing taxonomic confusion involving the thorny seahorse complex. Indian Ocean populations were earlier often grouped with Hippocampus histrix. Morphological examination and DNA analysis indicate that the newly described Indian Ocean population is distinct. The species has been named in honour of marine conservationist Amanda Vincent.
India’s Conservation Approach
Seahorses are important indicator and flagship species of coastal ecosystems. In India, seahorses receive legal protection under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. Their conservation is linked with protecting coral reefs, seagrass beds and other shallow-water habitats.
Current Status
The species faces potential threats from fishing bycatch, habitat degradation, pollution and illegal trade. Scientists have therefore stressed the need for independent conservation assessment, population studies and appropriate evaluation under the IUCN Red List.
