Hantavirus Infection is a serious zoonotic disease caused by viruses belonging to the Hantaviridae family. The virus mainly spreads from infected rodents such as rats and mice to humans. In May 2026, concerns increased after an outbreak was reported aboard the luxury expedition cruise ship MV Hondius in the Atlantic Ocean.
The virus spreads mainly through inhalation of virus-containing particles released from dried rodent urine, saliva, or droppings. Unlike diseases such as malaria or dengue, hantavirus does not require mosquito or insect vectors. Human-to-human transmission is extremely rare, although the Andes strain found in South America has shown limited transmission between humans.
