HAL–Russia Partnership to Manufacture SJ-100 Aircraft in India

India and Russia have taken a decisive step in civil aviation manufacturing through a 2025 MoU between HAL and Russia’s PJSC-UAC to produce the SJ-100 (Superjet-100) passenger aircraft in India. Signed in Moscow on 27 October 2025, the agreement enables HAL to manufacture the aircraft for India’s domestic market, with future export potential. This marks a historic revival of full-scale passenger aircraft manufacturing in India after the AVRO HS-748 programme (1961–1988).

The collaboration involves licensed production, localisation of components, building an Indian supply chain, and establishing robust maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) capabilities. A joint working group will be formed in 2025–26, with infrastructure set up by 2026–27 and prototype assembly and certification by 2027–28. Production is targeted for mid-2028. This project integrates Indian vendors into a global value chain and advances India’s ambition of becoming an aviation manufacturing hub.
