GARUD High Resolution Binoculars

On 13 August 2026, India Optel Limited (IOL) launched the indigenous GARUD High Resolution Binoculars for the civilian market at DPSU Bhawan, New Delhi. The launch marks IOL’s entry into civilian optics and reflects the Government’s push for Aatmanirbhar Bharat in precision optical technology.
Background
India Optel Limited is a Miniratna Category-I Defence Public Sector Undertaking under the Department of Defence Production, Ministry of Defence. GARUD has been developed and manufactured by Ordnance Factory, Dehradun, which has a long legacy of precision optical manufacturing dating back to 1943. The product draws upon optical platforms used by the Defence Forces and Central Armed Police Forces.
Salient Features
GARUD provides 8x magnification with a 7.6-degree field of view, allowing users to observe distant objects while retaining a broad viewing perspective. It has ±5 diopter adjustment, soft-touch eyecups, an ergonomic grip and weather-resistant construction. Weighing around 610 grams, it is designed for portability and sustained outdoor use.
Civilian and Security Applications
The binoculars are suited for birdwatching, wildlife observation, forestry, travel, sports, marine activities and security-related use. This represents an important example of defence technology being adapted for civilian applications.
