The Government of India has recently appointed the National Productivity Council (NPC) as the first Environmental Audit Designated Agency (EADA) under the Environmental Audit Rules, 2025. This marks a significant institutional reform to strengthen environmental compliance and governance in India.
Salient Features: EADA is a central regulatory body responsible for standardising and supervising environmental audits across industries. It operates within the framework of key legislations such as the Environment Protection Act, 1986, Water Act, 1974, and Air Act, 1981. NPC will develop eligibility criteria, certification, and examination systems for Certified Environmental Auditors (CEA) and Registered Environmental Auditors (REA). It will also issue Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), maintain a public digital registry, and take disciplinary action against non-compliant auditors. The introduction of a digital audit platform aims to enhance transparency, monitoring, and accountability.
