CRPF Bravery Day is observed annually on 9 April to commemorate the extraordinary courage displayed by personnel of the Central Reserve Police Force during the 1965 conflict in the Rann of Kutch. On this day, a small contingent of about 150 CRPF जवान at Sardar Post successfully repelled an attack by nearly 3,500 Pakistani troops under “Operation Desert Hawk,” marking a rare instance where a paramilitary force defeated a regular army brigade.
Historically, the CRPF was established in 1939 as the Crown Representative Police and later reorganized under the CRPF Act, 1949. Over time, it has evolved into India’s largest paramilitary force, playing a crucial role in maintaining internal security. Its functions include riot control, counter-insurgency operations, election security, and protection of vital installations.
