The passing of Sonam Wangchuk on 10 April 2026 marks the loss of a distinguished war hero of the Kargil War. Known as the “Lion of Ladakh,” he symbolized courage, leadership, and dedication in high-altitude warfare.
Commissioned into the Indian Army in 1987, he initially served in the Assam Regiment and later in the Ladakh Scouts, a unit renowned as “Snow Warriors.” His operational experience included counter-insurgency in Northeast India and participation in Operation Pawan in Sri Lanka. However, his defining moment came during Operation Vijay (Kargil War, 1999).
In the Batalik sector, then Major Wangchuk led a daring mission to capture the strategically crucial Chorbat La ridge at an altitude of over 18,000 feet. Despite extreme weather and lack of artillery support, his unit successfully repelled infiltrators, securing a vital tactical advantage. For this exceptional bravery, he was awarded the Maha Vir Chakra, India’s second-highest wartime gallantry honour.
