COLLETES BHUTANICUS — RARE HIMALAYAN BEE RECORDED IN INDIA
Why in News
Scientists of the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) have recorded the rare Himalayan solitary bee Colletes bhutanicus in Tawang district of Arunachal Pradesh for the first time in India. Earlier, the species was known from Bhutan and China, including the Xizang region. The new record expands its known geographical distribution in the Eastern Himalayas.
Background
Colletes bhutanicus was first described from Bhutan in 2003. It belongs to the family Colletidae and is commonly described as a plasterer bee. Unlike social honeybees, it is a solitary bee. Individual females generally make separate nests rather than living in large colonies.
Key Features and Ecological Importance
The species has been recorded in Tawang at elevations of about 1,500–3,800 metres, showing its adaptation to Himalayan conditions. ZSI researchers observed it visiting 25 flowering plant species belonging to 10 botanical families, including mustard, buckwheat, coriander, beans, chilli and eggplant. This indicates its potentially important role in both wild-plant and crop pollination.
India’s Significance
The discovery highlights the rich but still incompletely documented biodiversity of the Eastern Himalayas. It also shows why scientific surveys of insects and pollinators are important for understanding ecosystem health, agriculture and climate-sensitive mountain habitats.
Current Status and Way Forward
This is a new record for India, not a newly discovered species. Further surveys are required to understand its population size, habitat requirements and conservation status. Protecting flowering diversity, reducing pesticide misuse and maintaining connected Himalayan habitats will be important for conserving such native pollinators.
