India has launched its first Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC-R) based Public Distribution System under the “Sugam e-Rupee Distribution Initiative.” This marks a major step towards integrating digital currency with welfare delivery.
Salient Features: Under this system, subsidies are transferred directly to beneficiaries in the form of digital rupee (e₹) into mobile wallets. The funds are “programmable,” meaning they can only be used to purchase ration from Fair Price Shops. Transactions can be done via QR codes (smartphones) or Aadhaar-based OTP (feature phones). It also supports offline payments in low-connectivity areas. Instant settlement ensures that shopkeepers receive payments immediately, improving liquidity.
