Border Roads Organisation (BRO) recently celebrated the 66th foundation day of Project Deepak, one of its oldest and strategically most important infrastructure projects in the western Himalayas. Established in May 1961, the project was initially created for the construction of the historic Hindustan–Tibet (H-T) Road, considered one of the most difficult mountain roads in India. Colonel S. N. Punj served as its first Chief Engineer.
Project Deepak is responsible for constructing, upgrading, and maintaining strategic roads, bridges, and related infrastructure in high-altitude regions of Himachal Pradesh, especially in Shimla, Kinnaur, Kullu, and Lahaul-Spiti districts. Headquartered in Shimla, it currently manages more than 1,100 km of road networks and has constructed over 2,200 km of roads and around 47 major bridges.
