Context and Significance: The Government of India has recently launched the Brahmaputra Riverine Lighthouse Project in Assam to improve navigation safety along the Brahmaputra River (National Waterway-2). This initiative represents India’s first attempt to install riverine lighthouses on an inland waterway. The project aims to enable 24-hour safe navigation, especially during night-time and adverse weather conditions, and to strengthen the Brahmaputra as a major trade and transportation corridor in Northeast India.
Project Details: The project will install four riverine lighthouses along the 891-km navigable stretch of the Brahmaputra from Dhubri to Sadiya. The selected locations include Pandu (Kamrup Metro), Silghat (Nagaon), Bogibeel (Dibrugarh), and Biswanath Ghat (Biswanath district). Each lighthouse will be about 20 metres high and powered entirely by solar energy, ensuring environmentally sustainable operation. The navigation lights will have a geographical range of about 14 nautical miles and a visibility range of 8–10 nautical miles. Sensors will also provide real-time weather and navigation data to vessels.
