India recently launched the Block-Level Monsoon Forecasting System through the India Meteorological Department (IMD), marking a major advancement in weather forecasting, agriculture support and disaster management. The system provides highly localized or “hyper-local” monsoon forecasts at the block level instead of the traditional district level.
The system has been developed under the guidance of the Ministry of Earth Sciences with support from institutions such as the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) and the National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF). It uses Artificial Intelligence, machine learning, satellite data, global climate models and historical weather records collected over nearly 100 years.
