BGP Hijacking

BGP (Border Gateway Protocol) Hijacking is a cyberattack in which an internet network operator or malicious actor manipulates the global internet routing system to divert, intercept, or disrupt data traffic. BGP functions as the internet’s routing backbone, determining the most efficient path for data packets to travel between different autonomous systems (AS). Because the protocol largely relies on trust among network operators, it is vulnerable to false route announcements that can misdirect internet traffic.

The issue gained renewed attention after allegations that internet access to Telegram users outside India may have been affected during a temporary restriction on the platform. Although such claims require technical verification, the incident has highlighted the security risks associated with internet routing infrastructure.
