BEGONIA NEELAMORUM: NEW FLOWERING PLANT SPECIES DISCOVERED IN ARUNACHAL PRADESH
Context: A new flowering plant species, Begonia neelamorum, has been described from Keyi Panyor district of Arunachal Pradesh. The scientific description was published in Taiwania on 5 August 2026. The plant was collected from steep, moist rock walls along the Keyi River at about 1,000 metres elevation.
Salient Features: The species belongs to the family Begoniaceae and section Monophyllon. It is a small perennial herb with a globose underground tuber, a single light-green ovate leaf, double-serrate margins and white flowers. It is distinguished from related species by its glandular-hispid covering, rounded stem, dichasial inflorescence and shorter floral styles.
Background: Begonia is among the world’s largest flowering-plant genera, with about 2,200 accepted species. Northeast India is an important centre of Begonia diversity. Scientific exploration increased the recorded regional total from 38 species in 2018 to 53 by 2025; the new discovery adds further evidence of the Eastern Himalaya’s rich but incompletely documented flora.
Community Link: The species was named after the Neelam clan of the Nyishi community, recognising local assistance during botanical exploration.
India’s Approach and Current Status: The discovery underlines the importance of taxonomy, field surveys, herbarium documentation and community participation in biodiversity conservation. The species is currently known from a very restricted habitat, and researchers have provided a preliminary conservation assessment rather than a final global IUCN listing.
