Baluchistan: History, Geopolitics and Regional Dynamics
(UPSC 15-Mark Answer Format)
1. Introduction
Baluchistan is a historically distinct region located in south-western Pakistan, extending into south-eastern Iran and southern Afghanistan. It is strategically significant due to its large mineral resources, proximity to the Arabian Sea, and location connecting South Asia, Central Asia, and the Middle East. Despite being Pakistan’s largest province by area, it remains one of the least developed and politically unstable regions.
2. Historical Background
Historically, Baloch society was organized through tribal confederations under local chiefs (Sardars). The region came under the Khanate of Kalat, which maintained semi-independent status during British rule.
