India has recently introduced its first indigenous amphibious drone, named AVATAAR (Amphibious Vehicle for Autonomous Tactical Aerial & Aquatic Reconnaissance). The drone represents a major technological advancement because it can operate both in the air and underwater, making it highly useful for defence, maritime surveillance, and coastal security operations.
Background and Development
The concept of amphibious or dual-domain drones has gained importance worldwide due to increasing maritime security challenges, underwater infrastructure protection, and modern naval warfare requirements. Recognising this need, India has encouraged indigenous innovation through programmes such as iDEX (Innovations for Defence Excellence) under the Ministry of Defence. AVATAAR has been developed under this framework, reflecting India’s broader policy of self-reliance in defence technology (Atmanirbhar Bharat).
