Recently, the Netherlands returned the historic Anaimangalam Copper Plates, also known as the “Leiden Plates,” to India as part of cultural restitution and heritage diplomacy. These 11th-century copper plates belong to the powerful Chola Dynasty and had remained in Dutch custody for more than three centuries. They are expected to be preserved and displayed by the Archaeological Survey of India.
The plates are associated mainly with Emperor Rajaraja Chola I and were formally inscribed during the reign of Rajendra Chola I. The bilingual charter contains Sanskrit and Tamil inscriptions. The Sanskrit portion records royal genealogy and divine legitimacy, while the Tamil section provides detailed administrative and land-revenue instructions.
