Context

History of the Issue
Conventional bird monitoring relies on manual surveys, visual observations and periodic censuses, which are labour-intensive, time-consuming and prone to human error. Rapid urbanisation around Mumbai, increasing human-wildlife interactions, and changing migration patterns along the Central Asian Flyway have highlighted the need for technology-driven conservation. India has already begun using AI in wildlife protection through the E-Eye surveillance system in Corbett and Kaziranga National Parks, AI-based elephant detection systems on railway tracks, and acoustic monitoring in the Western Ghats. The proposed sanctuary extends these innovations to avian conservation.
India's Stand
India promotes the integration of Artificial Intelligence with environmental conservation under the vision of sustainable development and Digital India. The project reflects India's commitment to biodiversity conservation, climate resilience, scientific wildlife management and eco-tourism while ensuring minimal ecological disturbance. It also aligns with the objectives of the National Wildlife Action Plan, the Biological Diversity Act, 2002, and India's commitments under the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the Ramsar Convention.
Current Status
The ₹45 crore project will cover 20.09 hectares, with only 0.35 hectares allocated for visitor infrastructure to minimise ecological impact. It has received Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) clearance from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) and technical approval from the Maharashtra Eco-Tourism Development Board. AI-enabled cameras, acoustic sensors and machine-learning algorithms will automatically identify bird species, monitor migration, analyse behaviour and generate real-time biodiversity data. The sanctuary will also feature a 2.16 km mangrove walkway, bird-watching decks, watch towers and digital interpretation centres. The initiative is expected to become a national model for AI-driven wildlife conservation, environmental education and sustainable urban eco-tourism.
