MODULE I: CYBER SECURITY AS NATIONAL SECURITY
Essay 1: Cyberspace as India's New National Security Frontier
Introduction: A New Dimension of National Security
Traditionally, India's national security was viewed in terms of protecting its land borders, territorial waters, and airspace. However, rapid digital transformation has created a new strategic frontier—cyberspace. Digital platforms now support governance, banking, communication, healthcare, transportation, defence, and public services. Consequently, cyber security has evolved from being merely a technological concern into a fundamental component of national security. Protecting India's digital infrastructure has become essential for safeguarding sovereignty, economic stability, and public trust.

Initiatives such as Aadhaar, Unified Payments Interface (UPI), Digital India, online banking, e-governance, FASTag, DigiLocker, CoWIN, and the Goods and Services Tax Network have transformed governance and service delivery. These digital public infrastructures have improved transparency, financial inclusion, and administrative efficiency. At the same time, they have significantly expanded the country's cyber attack surface. A successful cyberattack on any of these critical platforms could disrupt millions of citizens and severely affect economic activity.
Cyber Threats as National Security Challenges
Modern cyber threats extend far beyond ordinary hacking. India faces attacks from state-sponsored groups, organised cybercriminals, ransomware operators, cyber mercenaries, and extremist organisations. Cyberattacks can target financial systems, government databases, communication networks, defence establishments, and critical infrastructure. Such attacks have the potential to paralyse essential services without a single conventional weapon being fired. Cyber warfare has therefore become an important element of hybrid warfare, where digital attacks complement traditional military and information operations.
