ZOJILA TUNNEL
(GEOGRPHY/POLITY)
1. Why in Focus?
The Zojila Tunnel is in the news because it has reached a major construction milestone with the final breakthrough stage. This ambitious project is one of India’s most strategically important infrastructure developments. It is being built to provide all-weather road connectivity between Kashmir and Ladakh, regions that often remain cut off during winter due to heavy snowfall at Zojila Pass. The tunnel reflects India’s commitment to strengthening border infrastructure and improving transportation in remote Himalayan areas. Its progress is closely monitored because of its importance for national security, economic development, tourism, and regional integration in northern India.
2. About Zojila Tunnel
The Zojila Tunnel is a 13.14-kilometre-long road tunnel being constructed on the Srinagar–Kargil–Leh National Highway (NH-1). Situated at an altitude of about 11,578 feet above sea level, it connects Ganderbal district in Kashmir with Drass in Ladakh. Designed as a horseshoe-shaped, single-tube, bi-directional tunnel, it will ensure uninterrupted travel throughout the year. Currently, heavy snowfall often blocks the Zojila Pass during winter months. Once completed, the tunnel will provide safer and faster transportation across the region. It is expected to become one of the most important mountain transport corridors in India.
