THE GANDHI–IRWIN PACT (5 MARCH 1931)
1. Background of the Gandhi–Irwin Pact
The Gandhi–Irwin Pact emerged during the Indian freedom struggle after the Civil Disobedience Movement launched by Mahatma Gandhi in 1930. The movement began with the famous Dandi March, challenging the British salt laws. As the movement spread across India, thousands of freedom fighters were arrested, creating political pressure on the British government. The administration found it increasingly difficult to suppress the mass movement. To ease tensions and find a political solution, negotiations were initiated between Mahatma Gandhi and Lord Irwin, the Viceroy of India. These discussions eventually led to the signing of the Gandhi–Irwin Pact on 5 March 1931.
