THE DAY INDIA’S YOUNGEST FREEDOM FIGHTERS FACED THE BRITISH EMPIRE
(HISTORY)
1. Beginning of the Revolt
The Revolt of 1857 began when Indian soldiers in the British East India Company’s army refused to use new rifle cartridges believed to be greased with cow and pig fat. This offended both Hindu and Muslim religious sentiments. The issue became a symbol of growing dissatisfaction with British policies. Soldiers felt that their traditions and beliefs were being ignored. What started as military discontent quickly spread to different parts of India. The revolt became a major challenge to British authority and is remembered as the First War of Independence by many Indian historians. It marked a turning point in India’s freedom struggle.
2. Causes of the Revolt
The Revolt of 1857 was caused by a combination of political, economic, social, and religious factors. The British annexed several Indian states through policies like the Doctrine of Lapse, creating resentment among rulers. Heavy taxation affected farmers and common people, while traditional industries declined under British economic policies. Religious and cultural interference increased public anger. The cartridge controversy acted as the immediate trigger, but dissatisfaction had been building for years. Different sections of society, including soldiers, princes, landlords, and peasants, joined the uprising. Together, these grievances transformed local discontent into a widespread revolt against British rule.
